How to Choose Mala Beads

Everyday many people ask how to choose the right set of mala beads for their life. This is your guide to answer your questions and land the mala that will serve you right and that you will be most connected with.

Lets start with what mala beads are. Mala beads are meditation garlands that have been worn for thousands of years in traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism, yoga and meditation. They have a way to draw you into their uniqueness and energy. Some may feel this as an unexplainable attraction.

Mala beads are traditionally used for japa meditation – reciting a positive affirmation or mantra along each bead to come into a more calming, connected and spiritual state.

Our mala beads take these elements of the traditional culture of mala beads and add an intention to the mala bead. We have infused the healing qualities of crystals and given each mala bead necklace or stack their own intention. There are crystals for love, strength, prosperity, healing, break-ups, focusing, letting go, spirituality, grounding, protection and so on.

Choosing an intention is only half of the process. It is just as important to choose a mala that you are visually and aesthetically drawn to. The things we find beautiful are just as important in our healing as what they are meant for – whether it is art, a beautiful beach or a set of mala beads.

The big thing that can create a blockage when people go to choose their mala bead is figuring out what the intention they want to bring in their life. It is important to listen to your gut in these moments to learn what you really want and not what you think you should want.

To do this take a piece of paper and a pen and answer these questions:
What do I want?
What do I not want?
What is the most important value in my life?

This is a good starting point. There are so many ways to get clear on this: yoga, meditation, goal setting and vision boarding.

Or perhaps your intention is to start making clear decisions – that is a good place to start as well.

There is something powerful about wearing your intention. It makes your goal tangible at every moment of the day. Every time you look at your mala or feel it, you are reminded to stay on your chosen path. Distractions that are coming at you from all directions are averted when you have a physical object to touch and see. Often we hold our mala beads during a conversation or gaze at them in front of our mat during yoga and they remind us why we are here. It is also giving us a power to share with others our intention and create that affirmation in our life.

Here are several factors that you should be mindful of when choosing mala beads:
Beauty:
Things that you are attracted to are integral in your healing whether it is a beautiful landscape, a cute animal or a gorgeous mala. Surrounding yourself with beautiful and uplifting things is powerful.
Color:
What is your favourite colour? What colour of clothing do you wear often. You want to choose a mala that you will use and wear often so choose something that you can see being a staple.
Shape:
Find a mala with a shape that you connect with. Ever heard of sacred geometry? Choose something that you are drawn to.
Intention:
What do you want to create in your life? What are you working on? What do you want? What are you struggling with. Ask yourself these questions and see if they guide to what you want to create as your intention.
Energy
Every crystal we use in our mala beads as its own individual energy. Make sure that this energy aligns with your intention! A lot of malas will assist everyone on some level – see if you can find something that you connect with individually.
Intuition:
What was the first mala you were originally drawn to? – This is most likely the perfect mala for you! Remember listen to your gut. Just like in an interview you know if someone is right for the job within 15 seconds, look for this feeling when choosing a mala bead.

Choosing a mala is a combination of all of these factors – most importantly follow your intuition and follow your heart. Once you have your mala bead wear it and be proud of the intention you are now wearing in your life and can be reminded of in every moment to stay aligned with your true nature.

Nothin’ But Love →

So I have wanted to write about this for a while, for so many reasons.

1. Because I think it’s all to easy to let our busy lives carry us away and quickly neglect the attention our relationships need.

2. Who doesn’t love saying and hearing why they are adored, especially by their partners?

3. Taking time to connect is vital to our well being.

4. I’m a big, rather HUGE fan of gratitude.
I  could go on but instead, I encourage you to read this most recent piece I wrote for Mind Body Green.

New Year, New You!

The holidays are approaching and I know this can be a super stressful time for people, especially when we think about that 5 letter word that seems to up the pressure in our lives the first of the year.. G.O.A.L.S.
I’ve changed around the way I look at and interact with goals in my life over the past couple of years and found it be incredibly helpful. Which is why I am so freakin’ excited to share with you my new program, I’ve launched it specifically for this time of year!!!

New Year, New You.

You’re ready to make the changes needed in order to start living the life you’ve dreamed of. You desire to feel confident, inspired and filled with joy. Although you’ve set the typical goals in years past, about three months into the new year; you’re burnt out and your passion have sizzled. Or perhaps you never even set  goals because you don’t have the clarity or even know where to begin to create more of what you want in life. It’s time to relieve some of that pressure and get real about what you really want.

This program is designed to create an overhaul of how you not only approach goals, how you approach life. We will cover some serious ground work, and you will be given tools to address your limiting beliefs, learn to listen to your intuition in any given moment and make decisions from this place. So that you can take inspired action and feel damn good on the inside.

I will ask targeted question that will lead to clear answers. From there I will tailor a program based on your vision, your desires and your needs. We will get down to the nitty gritty and get real honest about what it will take in order to create your highest vision. You will learn the action steps to take along with skills that will help you gain the momentum you are desiring.  You will be given practices and exercises to help enhance your quality of life while propelling you forward.

As you approach the new year, you will create intentions that are based on your intuition and doing more of what makes you come alive. So that you are living your passions and empowered to live a life you love.

We meet for one hour over the phone or via skype each week for four weeks. After each session you will receive a book filled with your highlights, aha’s and tools learned throughout your program as well as, Self Love Prescriptions each week.  There will also be recommending reading that is highly suggested, not required. As well as recommended reading for the future upon completion of the program.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend filled with laughter and love.

XO,
Ash

I Dare You To Start Doing What You Really Want In Life

How I Handled Grief

A couple of thoughts on grief, on a personal note.
So, today is my oldest brother Ian’s birthday. He would have been 41 years old, which that in itself is crazy to think about, in the ‘we’re siblings we never imagined each other being older than 40 kinda’ way.’
Ian passed away four years ago. I didn’t write about it for a long time because in all honesty, I didn’t want sympathy. I wanted to be …alone in my pain and stay connected to my brother in any and all ways possible. The opinions and “oh my gosh I cant imagine” moments were not all that welcome out of what seemed like, self preservation.
Eventually, I opened up and spoke very, very openly and honestly about it. Then, mostly in private, I got really angry and then inconsolably sad and then felt guilty, and then sad again, then around again on a crazy roller coaster of emotions. I just had to let it out and feel as fully as I could and yes, sometimes the pain was unbearable.
So why am I mentioning this? To let you know, you’re not alone. Grief is a different and unique journey for everyone. We all deal with it the best way we know how in the moment. And it is, a moment to moment process of healing.
I’ve learned a lot in the process, here are a couple of things that have been really helpful and brought me peace in moments I didn’t know how to deal…
1. Forgiveness. For the situation, the person, the things not said, the moments you wish you had, the ones you wish you could get back, etc, forgive.
2. When you’re ready, choosing to focus on the love shared rather than the current pain.
3. Realizing and trusting that this too shall pass.
4. Being open and honest about where I was emotionally rather than trying to hide it.
5. Asking for help from the people I trust and love.
6. Giving myself the time and space to feel and heal the way I uniquely needed to.
7. Expressing gratitude for the gifts I received for having my brother as a part of my life for as long as I did, celebrating our endless memories.
8. Then eventually focusing on what I love and doing more of that, everyday.
I hope this is helpful on some level for you.
Sending love. A

Don’t Get Your Panties In A Bunch

You have Big Visions.

You’re a Dreamer.

You sit at your desk wondering what it would be like to have more freedom. To go on vacation whenever you damn well please, rather than on your ‘paid vacation time.’

You often think, “there has to be something more than just this…. Is it 5 o’clock yet?”

You may even be a little rebellious towards your boss, because truthfully; you loathe working  for someone else.

Yet your thoughts quickly go to….

“But I’m not an entrepreneur, I don’t have the cojones to branch out and start my own biz. I would have to go into debt. What if it didn’t work out? What if my concept is overrated? And god forbid, what if nobody likes it?’

Breaking news!!!! It doesn’t matter.

Just because you’re thinking limiting thoughts; doesn’t make them true. tweet it!

Don’t get your panties in a bunch over something you’ve never even given a chance.

The truth is, everyone who has branched off and created a business on a small and even large scale has had these very thoughts or something similar. The only difference is they took action despite their fear.

The bigger question is what would happen if you DIDN’T pursue these visions. What would happen with this burning desire for freedom, expression, joy, exploration, creativity, innovation and excitement?

Would it fizzle? Would you stay exactly where you are?

You might..

Picture this… Your burnt out in your job. You’re suddenly tired a lot. Even dare I say.. bored. You get caught up in mindless tasks to help make the day go by faster. This starts to leak into other areas of your life and before you know it; you’re just going through the motions of your life. You don’t dig it. Yet you’re so use to it, you don’t even know where to begin to spark that passion again..Sound familiar?

Denying our desires creates a slow leak of passion from our lives.

It’s time to start listening closely to your desires and passionately pursue them. tweet it!

You see, everyone starts somewhere. Every entrepreneur was once, just a person with an idea they were excited about. The more they thought about it and let it brew; the more hot they became. Soon their cup was spilling over so they started taking action .

They put themselves out there and gathered the resources and people to help make their vision a reality. It was scary, especially in the beginning. There were plenty of times they probably wanted to puke from a combination of excitement, nervousness, and fear of the unknown.

They probably even asked themselves; “What the hell am I doing?” At least a dozen times..

Yet the passion was too alive to NOT go for it. So they took risks. They got out of their comfort zone. They stretched their minds and expanded their capabilities.

And slowly but surely, this vision was no longer a dream in the far off future; it was their reality. One they chose, one that makes them feel alive.  Where they know they are giving back in the best way they know how, because their passion fuels their work.

Does it mean life becomes suddenly perfect? NO. There are plenty of hiccups along the road. There are different challenges in being an entrepreneur. Yet the positives, the benefits, far outweigh the negatives. (at least in my opinion)

Take it from one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time,

“There’s no greater thing that you can do with your life, than to follow your passions in a way that serves you and the world.”  Sir Richard Branson

So I would dare to say, following your passions is worth the risk.

Oh and when you take this risk, in a smart and efficient way with your business…. You can take that vacation whenever you damn well please!

Can I get a witness??

I have a little secret.

It’s about something that totally lights me up. You know what I mean, where it feels like excitement is the only thing running through your veins, that kinda’ light.

So here it is.

I really dig helping people discover their life purpose. I mean, I love it with a passion.

Whenever that moment happens and I see a person’s eyes light up as if they’re a little kid seeing Christmas lights for the first time. I want to yell, “Hell YAY! Can I get a witness??”

Sometimes, I even break out my hammer dance.. Ok; just kidding, but I have thought about it!

So what is a life purpose and how the hell do you define it?

Let me just tell you what it’s not real quick. It’s not a job title, though it does help you gain massive clarity about your career. That’s not all it is.

OK, now that we have that clear.

It’s a bright and beautiful blend of your greatest qualities, mixed with how you most enjoy using those qualities while helping and working with others.

Sounds like a piece cake, ey?

Or maybe not, maybe it sounds a bit daunting to you to even think about one let alone two of your greatest qualities.

I know, I’ve been there. Six short years ago.

You see it started with a book my father gave me for Christmas. A six hundred pager that I wondered; when am I ever going to have time to read this? Yet, once I dove in I was hooked.

Within months, I had discovered my life purpose. I’ll never forget, it was as if someone had pulled the curtains from in front of eyes and I saw life and the opportunities that came my way, from a whole new vantage point. I was raring to go with enthusiasm that was untamable.

Why had this one statement changed my life so much?

Because it helped me realize on a whole other level that I could create a life I truly loved. Where I didn’t have to have the job that just looked good on paper or would make the most money.

I no longer needed to feel like I was drowning in a list of to dos and unrealistic expectations. Finally the lingering question of, should I go back to school so I could get a job with more security, and a fancy schmancy title? That was confidently thrown out the window.

This very statement, and all that came with it; helped me release the chains of ‘shoulds’ I had placed all over my spirit. Those exact chains that had kept me from going after my dreams. I was now able to listen to my inner guide with confidence. I trusted it and knew that if I took time to slow down and listen to it regularly, while celebrating my unique gifts; the answers and path would be revealed.

And sure enough it was. Now It was time to take action, purpose filled action.

Which felt so different than anything I had done before. I no longer felt like I was constantly swimming upstream against the current of life with little energy. The clarity I had gained instantly boosted my confidence, and in a strange way gave me the green light to be more me.

Your purpose consistently encourages you to be more YOU!   tweet it!

I infused it in everything I did, my relationships, my career, my spirituality and even my health; because it’s what came naturally to me.

The good news, each and everyone of us has one. That means you, yes you reading this right now.

You have a purpose inside you filled with your uniqueness and it wants to be expressed.  tweet it!

I promise.

In this discovery, you could give yourself more freedom than you ever dreamed possible. Sounds kind of amazing, doesn’t it?

This is my work and I love every minute of it. I am inspiring others to improve the overall quality and well being of their lives.

In the process of discovering their purpose; I’ve witnessed college students land their dream job right after graduating. I’ve seen retired professional athletes realize a whole new way they can help others using their talents, while optimizing their lifestyle. I’ve known CEO’s who gained massive clarity in how to run their company more efficiently, effectively and in turn increased their profits.

I could go on and on about the benefits and how much it improves the overall quality of your life..

But now I want to know… what’s your purpose? What lights you up in life? Fill me in, I love hearing from you.
